Why I’m Not Excited For The Amazing Spider-Man.
It’s no secret that I love Spider-Man. I really do. I own all the comics, movies, t-shirts, video games, hell even my MacBook is Spider-Man themed. So, shouldn’t I be stoked about the new movie coming out on my birthday? I SHOULD be, but I’m not.
Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of Andrew Garfield, I love Emma Stone, Dennis Leary is always wonderful, Martin Sheen is the man, and Rhys Ifans is a fantastic actor. Solid cast, and even a solid director in Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer), but I’m STILL not satisfied.
They had a chance to make this movie the next Dark Knight. Spider-Man is a dark story, it deserves a dark movie. I want grittiness, I want there to be real drama, I expect to leave the movie theater thinking one of those actors could win an Oscar. BUT NO. They once again have given a light hearted treatment of Spider-Man.
The Marvel company of course wants to appeal to kids, no doubt about that, but does that mean we have to make Spider-Man a pussy and have everything work out for him? This is why Batman will always be rated above Spider-Man, because Batman is a badass. Batman also has the Joker and the Riddler. Some of the best villains of all time. But Spider-Man has villains like that too. The Green Goblin is pretty much the same as the Joker. Why not treat him as such?
I just want Spider-Man to be a heavy drama like The Dark Knight was, I loved the first 3 movies, but if you’re gonna reboot the franchise, make sure it’s A DIFFERENT MOVIE.
